Colonial Williamsburg

Today we went on a road trip and a little family adventure. We went to Colonial Williamsburg! It was super fun even though it was quite a drive and it was cold. The wind was blowing and the temperatures didn't get above 29 degrees the whole time. The Little Bean had on lots of layers and even had the little plastic bubble thing on over her stroller to block the wind. She was perfectly content and, as a woman said in passing, "snug as a bug in a rug!"

I am not sure if you guys have ever been to Colonial Williamsburg but it is awesome. Basically, it is a living museum which combines three of my favorite things; history, museums, and the opportunity to ask questions! I have lots of questions. The husband really enjoyed it too, but his patience were worn thin by my desire to never leave the different buildings where they were demonstrating stuff. There was an apothecary, shoe maker, gunsmith, saddle maker, blacksmith, etc. And my favorite was the GAOL! It was super cool. Each of the buildings had people working in them and demonstrating the trade. They were in character and talked about how things were done and the revolution and whatnot. It was just really interesting. I totally recommend going if you have any interest in history. You can even rent costumes and walk around the area looking like you belong there.

Sadly, we didn't take a lot of photos. Here are a couple.

The Husband and the Little Bean were put in the stockade. Did you know that back in the 1700s jail was not used as a punishment. It was only used to hold the bad guys until their punishment was meted out. That was usually whipping, the stockade, being kicked out of the settlement and hanging. All punishments were executed in public.

The husband and the Little Bean also visited their house...The governor's mansion! Doesn't he look like he really belongs! You can also see the Little Bean's bubble!

  1. Not only were criminals placed in the GAOL, the mentally unstable were also frequent residents as well. Hmmmm...interesting.
