Playing Possum

First off, let me address my spelling of "possum." I know it should be spelled opossum, but I don't care. I will spell it the way I want so don't nag me.

So, the idea of playing possum generally indicates that one is pretending to be asleep. Not so in the Beany Family.

The other day, the Little Bean was sitting upside down on the couch with her head hanging down towards the floor and her legs sticking up in the air. She asked me which animal sat like she was sitting. I was taken off guard and answered with the first animal that came to mind...the possum. Then the Little Bean became a little obsessed with possums. She wanted to know why they slept upside down, how they hung on, etc. For the next couple of days she insisted on watching TV like a possum. THEN I mentioned that possums play dead when they are scared...and the questions started all over again. What were possums afraid of, which animals ate possums, what noises did possums make, etc.

The next thing I know my daughter is crawling around on hands and knees singing, "possum, possum possum." She then insisted that I pretend to be a predator and try to eat her. When I got close she flipped over on her back, stuck her arms and legs into the air and tried to be still and pretend to be dead, EXCEPT that she was giggling hysterically. She informed that my line was, "Oh Man!! No one wants to eat a dead possum!" It was pretty funny and an act that was repeated about a MILLION times. I was in the kitchen cooking supper and this little girl crawls by singing, "possum, possum, possum," and giggling like a total goof. I, of course, took a break from cooking in order to pretend to be an attacking mountain lion hungry for possum.

The Little Bean loves to play possum.

unrelated to possums, I wanted to share this photo. If you look at the background of the clouds out the window you can see the storm rolling in. Because our apartment's window look south west, we can always watch the storms roll through and because it is the UK the storms roll through constantly. One minute sunshine, the next minute driving rain and crazy wind. Unexpectedly, I sort of like it. I really thought I would hate the crummy weather here, but with this beach/storm view I can certainly deal with it.
