Fun Friday With The Fam

After a yummy breakfast, enjoyed at a kid size table, we spent a lovely Friday down at Kents Caverns.

While we do not have any photos of the caves, we do have these pics of Sophia excavating some fossils!  She even found a few "gemstones" in the sand while looking for fossils.  She had such a fun time and asked questions to the tour guide.  She really enjoyed seeing the place where the Cave Bears hibernated and where early man lived.  There was a display near the mouth of the cave where bones that were found in recent excavations were found.  She was able to identify a leg bone, and also talked with the guide about the foot bones of the cave bear.
The only funny thing is that she learned about hyenas as an enemy of early man and that they could smell their prey in the cave and didn't need light to find them.  She also recently learned about pirahnas which smell their prey's blood in the water.  For the next couple days there was much confusion and frustration between hyenas and pirahnas.  We had an entire conversation with her about hyenas only to find out that she was talking about pirhanas the entire time.  :)
Hank was less interested in the stories of hyenas and more interested in the little puddles and small ponds in the caves.  He ended up barefoot and pantsless by the end of the tour because he had gotten himeself so wet from the puddles.  He also liked the copies of the hyena, cave bear, and early man skulls.  He did NOT want to give them back.  The sand boxes with fossils in them were quite popular.  He thought it was awesome to cover them up and dig them out again.  All was well until he decided that throwing handfuls of sand in the nearby boxes was a better way of digging the fossils than sweeping the sand away with a little brush.
At that point, his attention was directed at the station where he could paint faces and make cave drawings....with chalk.
